Building code requirements often originate from published standards. Although the original wording and intent may be modified during the code-writing process, familiarity with the underlying standard can be useful in achieving compliance.
With that in mind, this manual has been written to help readers understand the refrigerant use restrictions outlined in ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 15 – 2022, Safety Standard for Refrigeration Systems. It is not intended to discuss every requirement in the standard; rather, it attempts to focus on those aspects of the standard that are most pertinent to the HVAC system design engineer.
This manual addresses many types of refrigeration systems—from packaged rooftop units to VRF systems to large water chillers—and all refrigerant safety groups, including A2L.
